EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating various types of psychological trauma, anxiety, and depression. The therapy works by using eye movements or other bilateral stimulation to help the brain process and integrate traumatic memories.

Are you experiencing emotional distress, anxiety, depression?

Are you having trouble sleeping, physical symptoms or difficulty in forming and maintaining relationships?

Have you tried to resolve these issues but have not been able to?

You may need a different approach to process trauma and CICC therapists can help you with EMDR.

EMDR therapy has been shown to be effective in reducing symptoms of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Some people report feeling relief from symptoms after just a few EMDR sessions, while others may need more.

EMDR therapy is a type of psychotherapy that has been used for over 30 years to help people recover from traumatic experiences. During EMDR therapy, a therapist will guide you through a process that involves bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or sound, to help you process and integrate traumatic memories.

What is Trauma?

Trauma refers to a deeply distressing or disturbing experience that exceeds a person’s ability to cope and process it effectively. It can result from a wide range of events, including physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, natural disasters, war, car accidents, and other types of sudden, life-threatening events. The effects of trauma can be both short- and long-term, and can include emotional distress, anxiety, depression, insomnia, physical symptoms, and difficulty in forming and maintaining relationships. Trauma can also have a lasting impact on an individual’s beliefs, values, and sense of self, and can lead to the development of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health conditions.

About EMDR

EMDR therapy may be a good fit for you if you're struggling with the effects of trauma, anxiety, or depression. However, it's important to talk to a mental health professional to determine if EMDR therapy is the best approach for you.

EMDR works by using bilateral stimulation, such as side-to-side eye movements, to help individuals process traumatic memories and negative beliefs about themselves. During the session, the client is guided through different phases of treatment, beginning with a thorough client history and preparation for the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) portion of the session. The individual focuses on a troubling memory while simultaneously focusing on an external stimulus that creates bilateral eye movement, often through watching the therapist move a finger.

The bilateral stimulation bypasses the area of the brain that has become stuck due to the trauma, allowing the left side of the brain to self-soothe the right side of the brain. Clients often experience increased insight into previously disturbing events and long-held negative thoughts about themselves that have grown out of the original traumatic event. With EMDR therapy, individuals can achieve a peaceful resolution and regain a sense of safety in their world. EMDR therapy sessions typically last for about an hour and may require multiple sessions for optimal results.

EMDR therapy can benefit those who have experienced psychological trauma, anxiety, and depression by helping them process and integrate traumatic memories. It involves bilateral stimulation to alleviate symptoms and promote emotional healing.

During an EMDR session, you'll work with a therapist to identify a traumatic memory and any related beliefs, emotions, and physical sensations. Then, the therapist will guide you through a series of bilateral stimulation exercises while you focus on the memory. The therapist will also help you process any new insights or emotions that come up during the session.

The length of treatment varies depending on the severity of the trauma, the type of trauma, and the individual's response to therapy. As a general rule, it can take anywhere from 3 - 12 sessions to reprocess negative memories of a traumatic event completely.

Many people experience significant improvement in their symptoms after just a few sessions. Others may need up to 12 sessions to reprocess all negative memories of the traumatic event fully. Your EMDR therapist will work with you to determine the best treatment plan for your specific needs and help you achieve lasting healing and positive change.
